“Why, Nils of the ‘Goodwill of Luckton’ got his mother to go down-stairs and then he called us boys to come aboard and get some apples; and when we went he told his mother there were thieves on board; and he called the policeman.” “No—no, sir,” stammered Bob, helplessly. “He wasn’t there—he’s in Las Cruces—” She shrunk involuntarily at the sound, and pursuing the windings of the cavern, fled into its inmost recesses. Here she had not been long when the voices sounded through the cave, and drew near. It was now evident that Hippolitus was conquered, and that her enemies were in search of her. She threw round a look of unutterable anguish, and perceived very near, by a sudden gleam of torchlight, a low and deep recess in the rock. Bob had difficulty in keeping the craft from mishap. After narrowly escaping shipwreck between two particularly vicious looking jagged stones he decided that there was no safety in going on the way they had. Suddenly he had an idea. “Why—why of course not. Why of—of course it isn’t true. I—I don’t know what you mean. I—I—”.
